Keycard Origins: Why We Built Keycard

Crypto’s early days were chaos - a gold rush of innovation with a security catch. Private keys, the lifeline to your digital fortune, were stuck in a limbo of half-baked solutions. Hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor were a start, but they weren’t enough. Closed systems. Clunky designs. We saw the cracks and decided to fix them. That’s how Keycard was born.

Six years ago, fueled by Status’s ethos of freedom and privacy, we set out to build something different. Not just another wallet, but a revolution in your pocket. Keycard wasn’t about locking your assets away - it was about handing you the keys to true self-sovereignty. No compromises. No middlemen. Just you, your crypto, and a tool you could trust because you could see it.

[...] on a train ride through China, one of Status’s co-founders sat next to a major PoW miner. Between crypto chats and app refreshes, the miner proudly showed off his mobile wallet as it raked in block rewards. [...] Secure? Not so much! ~ from "(re)introducing Keycard"

Which is why we started with a simple question: Why should you gamble your financial future on opaque tech? The answer: You shouldn’t. So we made Keycard fully open-source - code, hardware, as much as possible.

Keycard is a rethink of what a hardware wallet can be. Here’s what we bring to the table:

  • Lightweight Powerhouse: A slim, card-shaped design that fits in your wallet - discreet enough to hide, tough enough to handle spills, dust, and extreme temps (-35°C to 50°C). No bulky brick screaming “steal me”
  • Unbreakable Security: Built on a JavaCard secure element with Common Criteria EAL6+ certification - the gold standard. Your keys stay locked inside, non-extractable, untouchable even by us
  • Counterfeit-Proof: Our open-source protocol lets any wallet verify it’s a genuine Keycard. No fakes, no tricks
  • No Strings Attached: No battery to die, no cables to snag - just tap and go with NFC. It’s always ready when you are
  • Total Control: Pair it with Status on desktop, Android and iOS. Send assets, swap, bridge

This isn’t hype - it’s engineering for peace of mind. JavaCard’s sandboxed environment isolates every transaction, slashing risks like hacks or leaks. Add tamper-resistant hardware and a community-audited codebase, and you’ve got a wallet that’s as secure as it is transparent.

We didn’t stop at tech specs. We tackled the real pain points:

  • Paper Backups? Trash That: Lose a scrap of paper, lose your fortune. Keycard lets you split your keys across multiple cards - cheap (from €25), discreet, and secure. One’s a vault, another’s a backup, a third’s for memecoin chaos
  • Blind Signing? Never Again: See every detail before you sign. No more guessing what you’re approving
  • Privacy First: Big brands want your data. We don’t. Keycard’s stateless - no logs, no leaks, no nonsense

These were the sparks that lit the fire. Crypto OGs securing retirement bags and newbies chasing vibes told us the same thing: They wanted security they could understand and carry anywhere. We listened.

Keycard was just the beginning. This year, we’re taking it further with Keycard Shell - a stateless, air-gapped device that pairs with unlimited Keycards. Dropping soon™.
